As part of the gender strategy, IFS provides additional support for women to minimise the barriers many encounter when accessing resources. This year, IFS provided personalised support for women invited to apply in the 2023-S grant call. Applicants were supported by a group of expert facilitators through an online chat forum and in an online workshop.

In its ongoing strategic efforts to collaborate with like-minded institutions, IFS is now a partner in the Global Framework on Water Scarcity (GFWS), and joined the Partners Meeting held from 19-20 April 2017 at the FAO Headquarters in Rome. The key results of the meeting were: Rome Statement issued to demonstrate commitment and inspire partners of the Global Framework to address jointly water scarcity in agriculture in a changing climate, 14-member Interim Steering Committee established, Chair and Vice-Chair elected, Vision, mission and broad objectives agreed, and Elements of Joint Workplan developed.

“Science and Leadership for Transforming Institutions”—Young scientists are a light for Africa.

The week of March 5th through 10th brought distinguished organizations and committed young scientists from around the world to the University of Dar es Salaam Business School for the postgraduate course “Science and Leadership for Transforming Institutions”. Instituted by the Swedish University of Agricultural Sciences as part of the Sida funded ENGAGE Programme—ENGendering AGrbusiness and Entrepreneurship, the two week course was aimed at helping PhD students advance in their fields and develop leadership skills to solve global development challenges. IFS was invited to partner with SLU and RUFORUM (Regional Universities Forum for Capacity Building in Agriculture) in offering a course to help students build competencies to enable them to transform their institutions.

Workshop on Current Trends in Chemical and Pharmaceutical Sciences, and Related Disciplines: 1-7 March 2017

IFS, the National Research Council of Thailand (NRCT), Faculty of Science, Mahidol University, and the Center of Excellence for Innovation in Chemistry (PERCH-CIC) will jointly organize the 5th NRCT-IFS-MU-PERCH-CIC Workshop at Wangchan Riverview, Phitsanulok Province, Thailand. The aim of the workshop is to provide young scientists with scientific methodologies and new research trends in natural products, pharmaceutical sciences and related disciplines, as well as agricultural sciences. It is expected that approximately 50 participants from countries including Cambodia, Indonesia, Laos, Myanmar, Taiwan and Thailand will be attending the workshop and contributing oral and poster presentations. The program will also include invited lectures and a panel discussion.

In collaboration with the University of Limpopo Research Office, IFS is organising two consecutive grant proposal writing workshops. Their purposes are to enable early-career researchers to build their capabilities to apply for research funds from international funding organisations. The training will focus on the principles of scientific investigation, the components of the scientific method, and research practices. Under the guidance of senior researchers and experienced grant writers, participants will have the opportunity to apply the scientific method approach with their own research projects. They will also be advised on the formulation of research proposals to address the funding criteria of international organisations.

New Director at the International Foundation for Science (IFS)

The Board of Trustees is pleased to announce that Dr Nighisty Ghezae is to be appointed as the new Director of IFS from October 1st 2015. Dr Ghezae will take over from the current Director, Dr Graham Haylor, who has, inter alia, led the successful development, launch and implementation of a 10-year strategic plan 2011-20 for IFS. He is leaving to take up a new position in the UK.

IFS and AAS host a Consultative Meeting on Scientific Equipment Policy

On 20-21 August, 2015, IFS hosted a Consultative Meeting on Scientific Equipment Policy together with our long-standing partner the African Academy of Sciences near Nairobi. This is one of the concluding activities in the current phase of a MacArthur Foundation-funded project. In addition to colleagues from AAS and IFS, the 42 participants included representatives of academies of sciences and research institutes in Ethiopia, Ghana, Kenya and South Africa; ANAFE; BecA; CEMASTEA; icipe; IOCD; KNEC, NACOSTI, the Ministry of Higher Education, Science and Technology, several universities, institutes and education organizations in Kenya; NEPAD agencies; Seeding Labs; UNESCO; and IFS alumni from six African countries. The meeting’s purpose was to raise Pan-African awareness of how the identification and resolution of scientific equipment issues are critical for scientific development in Africa, and to identify national and regional channels to share learned experiences and to influence policy on scientific equipment.

Value chains of neglected crops in Africa

Neglected species (NUS) offer niche markets and incomes for farmers, better nutrition, and options for climate change adaptation. In an IFS project funded by the EU, stakeholders in Africa will develop value chain upgrading of two promising crops, Bambara groundnut and amaranth.
