There are few universities in the world which can offer the widest possible selection of specialised courses, delivered by the best experts in a given field. But there are many study courses of good quality available on the Internet, without charge. These are called "Massive Open Online Courses" or MOOCs. However, they are disparate – or put more bluntly, "all over the place".

Now an outstanding ex-grantee of IFS, Professor Atta-ur-Rahman (Professor Emeritus and HEC Distinguished National Professor at the International Center for Chemical and Biological Sciences, University of Karachi, Pakistan) has, with his colleague Syeda Sadia Khatoon, assembled some 300 lectures in a single document. It is called a "Video Book" and contains links to first-class lectures delivered by outstanding scientists.

This is an excellent development for students of chemistry, enabling them to study materials in advance of their formal lectures. "Video Books" of this type should result in a paradigm shift for teaching, with the classrooms becoming more as places for discussion and clarification of concepts rather than for passive reception of lectures.
